Family Trees from Thrift's Abstracts
researched by David Evans

David Evans has gone back to the basics in his research on the Cullens of Manorhamilton. His research presented here was taken from Thrift's Abstracts in order to obtain the most accurate information possible. Other family traditions, taken primarily from Burke's Irish Family Records or Landed Gentry, is known to be problematic in many cases. Written family histories, taken from previously written or oral histories are often tainted by inaccuracies due to distortion through time or due to information also taken from Burke's. David has turned to Thrift's abstracts in order to obtain information closer to the true source. Thrift's Abstracts are named after one Gertrude Thrift, a genealogist in Dublin just after the turn of the century. She had compiled a great amount of genealogical notes researched in the Public Records Office in the Four Courts of Dublin. In the Spring of 1922 a Civil War in Ireland, in response to the Anglo-Irish Treaty, resulted in an explosion and fire which destroyed nearly a thousand years worth of priceless national manuscripts, family histories, and other administrative documents. The work of Gertrude Thrift and others is all that remains of the treasured archives lost in 1922 and helped to restore at least a portion of what existed previously. You can visit the National Archives of Ireland online to learn more about the history of the Public Records Office.
