A new generation of authors is
skipping the old publishing model to head straight for their audience.
Self-publishing is easier, cheaper and more targeted than ever before.
For those who just love the feel of a
real book in their hands, it’s easier and cheaper than ever for authors to
self-publish with print-on-demand. My novel is available on Amazon.com ($11.99
Create Space) because I used an Amazon partner to publish. It was published in
March 2009.
It blends rock and roll fiction with
the ancient tradition of myth. Written in an experimental structure, the new
myth appears interspersed within the novel.
Van Blackmar lives in the Valley of
Dregs and Skidders – a slow death of a place. She sits alone in her room with
her books and music. Her favorite album Whiskey Myths, is by the fictional band
Bloodfire. The band’s story is told through lyrics, newspaper articles, even a
manifesto.
Mythology has been used for centuries
to symbolize shifts in cultural and social practices. Restless is a new myth
written by Van that explores the place for religion in modern society. Fewer
people associate themselves with an organized religion than any time in recent
history. Is the need for religion fading, or is spirituality changing?
When Old Woman Vera returns to the
edge, it’s the first riverwalker anyone has seen in their lifetime. They’ve
heard stories, but didn’t know if they were true. Vera’s return sets off
what will become the final riverwalk. Maeve is a young and unsure choice of
destiny, but she sets off through the Garden of the Goddesses and the Desert of
Rust and Blood into the hot, wet belly of creation. She meets characters along
the way that range from philosophical to insane, and she explores whether to
have faith in belief, itself.
She wrote this novel while living in
Seattle, Washington. She currently resides in Toledo, Ohio. Her writing tends
toward heavier themes that explore the habits, desires and expectations of
humanity. She’s currently writing her second novel, a political dystopian
thriller, which she also plans to self-publish as an e-book and print-on-demand
novel.
I would love to talk further about the
new opportunities in self publishing and about my first novel. I’m available
for interviews by phone, email or in person. Also, feel free to use any part of
the press release or online media kit without an interview.
